Be a part of the Virginia Savage McAlester Tribute to create programs that preserve and enhance the quality for neighborhoods, places, and landmarks in Dallas.
The passing of Virginia Savage McAlester, one of Dallas’ most influential and important historical preservationists, in 2020 was a loss for the entire preservation community. Virginia was a noted author, champion of historic preservation and a wonderful friend of Preservation Dallas. Her legacy is immense and extends across the nation.
Volunteers are actively involved with programs, tours, events and are needed at every level.
The Urban Armadillos organization was founded in 2012 by Mike Wyatt and Skyler Baty to enlist a group of civic-minded professionals to not only uncover culturally-significant landmarks and little known treasures within the central business district of Dallas, but to create pedestrian trails linking Dallas’ urban districts. The group was named Urban Armadillos and empowered to “Dig Up Dallas” district by district! From that small start the group has grown to over 300 professionals. In January 2013, the Urban Armadillos joined with Preservation Dallas with the goal to work together to finalize the trails and format the individual site information for use in brochures and a mobile app. The mobile app was recently completed and named Pegasus Urban Trails in honor of the “Pegasus” located on top of the historic 1922 Magnolia building in downtown Dallas.
